Coloring Books Grow Up -- They're Not Just for Kids Anymore

Publishers say the surge in sales began this spring. "We've been selling them for a long time, but the big spike really started earlier this year. I think it caught most publishers by surprise," says Ken Fund, CEO of Quarto Publishing Group USA, which markets the "Color Me" line and 24 other titles, selling 2.5 million copies since February.

"I think people are looking for ways to help them keep calm and stress-free," he says. "These appeal primarily to the female market, but it's crossed over into the male market, too, with tattoo images, skeletons, Day-of-the-Dead stuff."
