Fair Winds Author Enters Fray with Energy Drinks Statement

March 25, 2013
Deborah Kennedy, CEO of Build Healthy Kids and a co-author of Beat Sugar Addiction Now! For Kids , mentioned in a recent newsletter to New York parents that children should "never drink" energy drinks because of their high sugar content.

In a letter dated March 4, Monster Beverage, a maker of energy drinks, demanded that Kennedy retract and correct the statements or face a lawsuit.

Kennedy, who lives in Connecticut, said in an interview with the New York Times that she was stunned by the threat, in part because the newsletter never mentioned Monster Energy or any other product by name, but focused instead on the need for children to cut down on sugar-laden beverages.
