His book 101 Magic Tricks: Any Time. Any Place. – Step by step instructions to engage, challenge, and entertain At Home, In the Street, At School, In the Office, At a Party contains enough magic tricks and accompanying explanations to have you wowing friends and family with your slight of hand. Here are three dice and domino tricks that will fool your friends into thinking you’re a mind reader. Devious Domino: Predict the result of any game of dominoes – every time! REQUIREMENTS: A domino set Envelope Paper Pencil Preparation 1. Print on a piece of paper, “I predict the two end numbers will be a three and a five!” Seal this in the envelope. 2. While the domino set is being emptied onto the table, secretly take the domino with the 3–5 on it. Make sure no one sees you do this—you could even conceal the domino in the Finger Palm position. Performance 1. Place the prediction envelope on the table and instruct the volunteer to arrange the dominoes in any order she likes. She must adhere to the normal rules of dominoes, that is, each number must match the number next to it. 2. Once she has completed this, draw attention to the two numbers at the end of the line. Get the volunteer to open your prediction—it is spot on! Tip: This effect works because a complete set of dominoes makes a complete circle. By removing one domino, you are effectively “breaking” the cycle at a known point. You can easily repeat this effect by secretly removing a different domino and changing your prediction. Dice Divination: Your volunteer rolls a pair of dice – you predict the outcomes before he throws! REQUIREMENTS: A pair of dice Paper Pencil Performance 1. Gaze into the volunteer’s eyes for a second, then pick up the piece of paper and pretend to write something down (in reality, just use the edge of your nail to make a slight noise on the paper). Fold the paper in half and set it down on the table in full view. 2. Turn your back and ask the volunteer to roll the dice and then add the numbers on view together (in this example, 2 + 4 = 6). 3. Instruct him to pick up one of the dice and to add its bottom number to his total (6 + 5 = 11). 4. Instruct him to roll the first die again and to add the number that lands face up (11 + 1 = 12). Turn back to face the volunteer and glance at the total of the numbers showing—simply add 7 to this total and you will know what number he is thinking of (1 + 4 + 7 = 12)! 5. Pick up the piece of paper and pretend to call out the number you wrote earlier (in reality, you miscall the number you have in your head); crumple up the paper and get rid of the evidence! Dice Reading: Your volunteer stacks four dice at random – you can correctly name the total of the hidden numbers! REQUIREMENTS: 4 dice Performance 1. Instruct the volunteer to stack the four dice one on top of the other. Turn your back before she begins so that you cannot seethe dice. 2. Give the volunteer sufficient time to stack the dice and then turn back for just a second and ask her, “Have you completed the stack yet?” Immediately turn your back away again. As you say this you must get a quick glance at the number on the top of the dice stack. In this example it is a 4. 3. Now remark that there are seven sides of the dicethat cannot be seen—the one at the bottom and the six sides sandwiched between the dice. Instruct the volunteer to look at these sides and to silently add up the total and remember it. 4. Ask the volunteer if she has the total in her mind. Hold your fingers to her head and instruct her to think of the total. Wait a few moments, and then announce, “You are thinking of the number 24!” TIP This effect works because the top and bottom sides of a die always total 7. The total of four dice will thus be 28; all you need to do is subtract the secret number you glimpsed from 28. Buy from an Online Retailer US: UK: Learn 101 simple magic tricks to astonish and amaze!
