Art Techniques | 11 July 2016Keeping Proportions Share article facebook twitter google pinterest Scale and proportion can be a tricky thing to keep consistent for any artist. The exercise below from Pen & Ink Playbook shows you how to use the using the grid technique. This makes keeping proportions in your artwork a breeze. A grid is immensely helpful to keep proportions as accurate as possible when painting and sketching. Take a picture of something that you want to turn into a painting. Print it out and draw a grid on top of it. Draw another grid with the same measurements on the paper you’ll be painting. When sketching, notice the elements in your photo in relation to the edges and areas of the grid. For example, is the end of the element in the middle or at the edge of the square? TIP: FIRST SKETCH YOUR PICTURE WITH A PENCIL, ERASE THE GRID WHEN DONE, AND THEN APPLY COLOR WITH INKS. THIS WAY, YOU’LL HAVE A CLEANER PAINTING WITHOUT THE PENCIL GRID MARKS.
