Weather is what is going on in the atmosphere (the air around the earth) at any moment- how cloudy, sunny, wet or dry it is. It can change a lot from day to day. The Earth’s Atmosphere Our planet, the Earth is surrounded by a thin layer of air called the atmosphere. The air can heat up, cool down, move around and carry water. It also has a pushing force, called air pressure. Scientists divide the atmosphere into five layers. Most weather happens in the layer nearest the Earth’s surface. Weather fronts Weather forecasters often talk about ‘fronts’. A weather front is a dividing line between two different blocks or masses of air. One air mass may be cold and dry, while the another could be warm and damp. Weather Around the World Weather conditions around the world vary a lot. This is mainly because some parts of the earth get stronger sunshine than others, so they are warmer. The shapes of continents, oceans and mountains also affect the weather in different places. The Power of the Sun Most of our weather is caused by something far away from the earth – The Sun! Beside giving us bright, sunny days, the sun heats ups the earth and the air around it. The heat makes the air move, causing wind and weather fronts. It also makes water from the oceans, rivers, lakes and plants evaporate into the air which leads to rain and snow.
