Art Techniques | 24 May 2017Get Creative with Negative Space Share article facebook twitter google pinterest Are you looking for a way to get creative with your illustrations? Explore the concept of negative space and see what types of motifs you come up with in Pen & Ink Playbook! Frisket is a masking fluid or adhesive paper typically used in watercolor painting to cover areas on the paper the artist doesn’t want painted—it’s great for painting with ink, too. Draw the outline of your painting above with pencil, apply frisket on top of it, and let it dry. Color around it to create a background and notice the motif appearing in the noncolored space. When dry, remove the frisket and the pencil outline with a soft eraser. TIP: Get frisket that is white or transparent because the colored ones can sometimes tint the paper. To apply the frisky, use an old, cheap brush that you don’t mind getting compacted and slightly damaged.
