Editor – words & pictures


Start date: January 2023.


We have an exciting opening for an ambitious Editor to join the creative team behind words & pictures and make their mark in this newly relaunched imprint as we enter a period of significant growth. An imprint of The Quarto Group, words & pictures is a vibrant, dynamic list of illustrated non-fiction and picture books for children. Our diverse list of titles range from narrative non-fiction, picture books, highly illustrated profile-led reference and on-trend activity.


Who we are looking for:


Reporting the Associate Publisher, the successful candidate will have at least 2 years’ experience working with children’s content, particularly non-fiction. You will work closely with authors from structural edit to proofread, and champion their titles throughout. Experience of working in publishing and demonstrable skills in developing successful children’s content is preferred. Working hours 


35 hours per week, Monday to Friday. We currently operate a discretionary hybrid model, with three days in our London office and two working from home.


About the role 

  1. Project manage and edit 15–20 titles, from concept stage to printed book.
  • Work with the Associate Publisher to shepherd projects through the Acquisitions process.
  • Liaise with Production to obtain costings on books that aren’t on scale pricing.
  • Create schedules for authors and illustrators and ensure print deadlines are met.
  • Commission text and work with the designer to commission artwork if necessary.
  • Ensure high standards and editorial accuracy by giving feedback at every stage of the process, from roughs to final layouts.
  • Be the point of contact for authors and provide excellent author care.
  • Co-ordinate out-of-house editorial processes such as proofreading, Americanizing and indexing as necessary.
  • Carry out pre-repro editorial checklist ahead of files being sent to Production.
  1. Management of metadata and administration for each title.
  • Generate contracts for authors and illustrators and ensure they are signed and filed correctly on the system.
  • Create freelancer forms and get them signed when freelancers are being used.
  • Write metadata and keep Firebrand up to date.
  • Pass invoices to Accounts in a timely fashion.
  • Assist with Book Fair and Sales Conference preparation as needed.
  • Work with Design to create blads (advance material) for each title according to the deadlines set in the repro doc. 
  1. New idea generation
  • Come to new ideas meetings and brainstorming sessions with concepts to contribute.
  • Develop ideas that are handed over by the Associate Publisher into fuller concepts as necessary.
  • Stay on top of current trends in the children’s entertainment space through independent research, store visits or consumer research.

About you 


You’ll be an ambitious, highly creative and organised person with excellent editorial skills. You will have a strong eye for design, solid commercial awareness with a keen interest in children’s trends.


Position Specifications

 Minimum Skills, Knowledge & Abilities


  • Excellent grasp of the English language including spelling and grammar.
  • Strong editorial skills including copyediting and proofreading.
  • Experience of project management.
  • Numerate, detail-oriented and efficient at juggling a large number of tasks.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • A passion for children’s content.
  • An excellent level of author and/or stakeholder care.


  • Some knowledge of InDesign.
  • Previous experience of copyediting and proofreading.



  • Experience of editing and project managing content for children.
  • Knowledge of the standard industry proofreading symbols.
