Philip Atkins is the son of a noted amateur railway photographer, and served as the Librarian at the National Railway Museum, York, for 30 years. His long-time close involvement with the Museum’s huge archive set him in good stead when he was approached to write about the Flying Scotsman soon after his retirement.
