Fiction | 18 August 2015The Vegetarian Dinosaur Share article facebook twitter google pinterest We’re celebrating all things dinosaur this week at QuartoKids, and today we have a slightly quirkier kind of dino to introduce: Reginald, the vegetarian Tyrannosaurus Rex of T-Veg! Historically, the Tyrannosaurus Rex was a carnivore that acted as both a predator and a scavenger, meaning that it both hunted other dinosaurs and ate the remains of dead dinosaurs for food. Due to its giant size (12 meters long and almost 7 tons in weight) and carnivorous appetite, movies and books usually depict the T-Rex as an intimidating (or sometimes not so intimidating) villain. Our friend Reginald, however, gives the species a brand new image. Reginald is a vegetarian, or a veggie for short. Vegetarians are people (or dinosaurs!) whose diet consists of fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, nuts and beans, and all other foods excluding meat –meaning no steak, chicken, pork, or fish. It might seem like a limited lifestyle, but vegetarians actually enjoy a widely diverse and delicious array of foods. Just look at Reg, who munches on everything from broccoli and beans, to grapes and greens, to berry shakes and avocado pie. When Reginald’s meat-eating friends and family tease him for being a vegetarian, poor Reg starts to doubt his ability to be a T-Rex. The dino nay-sayers in T-Veg insist that meat is what makes us strong, and fast, and quick-witted; however, if you look at a list of famous vegetarians, you’ll see that that can’t possibly be the case! Heisman trophy winner Ricky Williams runs on veggie fuel, comedian Ellen DeGeneres gets her energy from a plant-based diet, and the great mind of Albert Einstein subsisted on veggie goodness. Will Reg find a way to prove his T-Rex-ness and stay true to his veggie-loving self? Catch a sneak peek of the story in the excerpt below! Also, if reading about Reg’s munchies makes your mouth water for some veggie deliciousness, try your hand at some the recipes in Easy Vegetarian Kitchen. Excerpted from T-Veg, available soon in the UK. Reginald ate BROCCOLI, Reginald ate BEANS, Reginald ate bowls and bowls of GARLIC, GRAPES and GREENS. “It’s just so yum!” he told his friends, “you must give this a try,” while wolfing down amassive slice of AVOCADO pie. MANGOES, PEACHES, PINEAPPLES, he ate them by the dish. “BANANA-BERRY shake,” he’d say, “Mmm, that’s SO delish!” CARROTS, PARSNIPS, LETTUCES… oh yes, he ate them too! and for a tea-time treat he munched on pea and spinach stew. “For goodness sake what’s wrong with you?” Papa T-rex groaned. “You should be eating meat, MEAT, MEAT!” Mama T-rex moaned. “You’ll never win the Trannolympics!” laughed his best friend Hugh. “Why ever not?” asked Reginald. “I’m just as FAST as you.” Buy from an Online Retailer In The UK: Share article facebook twitter google pinterest If you have any comments on this article please contact us or get in touch via social media.
