Cute paper dolls dressed in washi tape designs are a delight to make. Inspired by classic wooden dolls like kokeshi and matryoshka, you can mix and match different colors and patterns to make your own unique version! Display a set of dolls, or use these cuties as gift tags or greeting cards. Using washi tape to color in pictures is a great technique to master. Once you’re comfortable, you can use this technique to add your favorite washi designs to almost any picture. TOOLS & MATERIALS • Doll template (page 124–125) • Card stock • Washi tape • Craft knife • Markers • Scissors Step 1 Using the template provided on page 124, trace the outline of the desired doll size onto card stock. Use a dark marker or pen so you can see the outline through the washi tape. Note: These instructions are based on the large doll. Adjust measurements and number of tape strips as needed when making the smaller dolls. Step 2 Choose a washi tape design for the head scarf. Cover the top half of the doll with strips of tape. Align the tape so that edges meet without overlapping. Try to match the pattern where possible. TIP: When drawing on washi tape, use permanent or paint markers to avoid smearing. Step 3 Use a craft knife to lightly cut through the tape to shape the bottom of the scarf. Peel off the excess tape. Then cut out a circle for the face. Use a light enough touch to cut only the tape and not the paper underneath. Step 4 Choose a washi tape design for the doll’s dress, and cover the rest of the doll from the neck down with tape, aligning the edges without overlapping. Then use a craft knife to cut along the edge of the scarf. Carefully remove any extra tape. Step 5 To make the apron, apply three strips of tape lengthwise from the neck to approximately 1″ above the bottom edge. Use a craft knife to trim the apron shape and clean up the edges around the scarf. Carefully peel away extra tape. Step 6 Use scissors to cut out the doll, cutting slightly inside the line. Use markers to draw the face and add apron details. Allow the ink to dry between colors. Step 7 If desired, repeat with the smaller dolls to make a set.
