We have an exciting new opening for an Assistant Editor to work on our award-winning adult trade list. The position is based in London and will include a mixture of office (3 days) and remote working.

From our long-established and highly regarded imprints Frances Lincoln, Aurum and Ivy Press, we are also home to new and dynamic lists Leaping Hare and White Lion Publishing.

Who we are looking for:

Reporting to the Editorial Directors, the successful candidate will be highly organised and collaborative, with excellent communication skills and an eye for detail.  Previous experience of working in publishing is preferred. Main Responsibilities:

  1. Editorial management
  • Manage and edit 10–12 titles, from concept stage to printed book, with relevant support from Commissioning Editor and Editorial Director.
  • Create schedules for authors and illustrators and ensure print deadlines are met.
  • Working alongside the design department, coordinate corrections and giving approval for reprints, updating the reprints notes and liaising with Production.
  • Ensure budgets are kept to.
  • Ensure high standards and editorial accuracy by giving feedback at every stage of the process, from roughs to final layouts.
  • Be the point of contact for authors and provide excellent author care.
  • Co-ordinate out-of-house editorial processes such as proofreading, Americanising and indexing as necessary.
  • Create required sales material (blads, AIs and presentations) when required.
  1. Administration
  • Generate contracts for freelancers and ensure they are signed and filed correctly on the system.
  • Write metadata and keep systems up to date.
  • Assist with Book Fair and Sales Conference preparation as needed.

The ideal candidate should:

  1. Have the ability to work collaboratively in a hybrid team environment, as well as independently.
  2. Have a meticulous eye for detail, accuracy and good editorial judgement.
  3. Be highly organised, skilled in multi-tasking and able to maintain schedules and budgets, alerting the Editorial Directors to any issues.

Required

  • Excellent grasp of the English language including spelling and grammar.
  • Numerate, detail-oriented and efficient at juggling a large number of tasks.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat.
  • An excellent level of author and/or stakeholder care.
  • Experience of project management.
  • Experience of administrative duties.

Desired

  • Some knowledge of InDesign.
  • Previous experience of copyediting and proofreading.
