Our History
Frances Lincoln Publishers was founded by Frances Lincoln in 1977. It published its first books two years later, and has been creating illustrated books of the highest quality ever since.

Its first illustrated books for children were published in 1983. Since then the imprint has won many awards with both fiction and non-fiction children's books, including the Independent Publishers' Guild Cultural Diversity Award in 2007. In 2008 the Frances Lincoln Diverse Voices Children's Book Award was established to further the mission for publishing children's titles that celebrate cultural diversity in the widest possible sense.

Both lists have a strong multicultural element and a high reputation internationally. Frances Lincoln's many publishing partners include Oxfam, The Royal Horticultural Society, The Victoria and Albert Museum and Amnesty International.

An illustrated stationery list appeared for the first time in 1992. Today Frances Lincoln publishes address books, desk diaries and journals in association with several major museums and institutions.

Frances Lincoln died, aged 55, in February 2001. Her husband, John Nicoll, took over the ownership and management of the company until 2011, when the shareholding of Frances Lincoln Ltd was acquired by The Quarto Group. Frances Lincoln is now part of the Quarto Publishing Group UK, and continues to publish more than 100 new books every year for both adults and children.

Featured in the story was information on The Quarto Publishing Group's coloring book program. Quarto will easily have a million adult coloring books in print this year, with the market continuing to surge, said Ken Fund, president and CEO of Quarto, a publisher of illustrated and creative titles. Those sales are being led by its Zen Coloring Book series, which includes the bestselling Color Me Calm and Color Me Happy, both by art therapist Lacy Mucklow with art by Angela Porter. The books have gone back to press 10 times in the past six months, for a total of more than 275,000 copies worldwide. "We imagined the books would appeal to adults looking to relax. But we never expected the responses we've received from people battling serious medical conditions," added editorial director Jeannine Dillon, who came up with the idea for the series after coloring with her four-year-old son.
