Materials:

-1x8x30″ cypress (used here) or cedar (actual size is ¾” thick x 7 ½” wide)

-Fourteen to eighteen 2″ exterior grade decking screws

Step 1

Step 1: Cut pieces out according to the drawings. Make kerf cuts on the underside of the roof piece (3/8″ in from edge and ¼” deep), along the front and two sides. These shallow grooves, used in many nest box plans, are usually made with a table saw. They help prevent rainwater from collecting underneath the roof and getting inside the nest box.

Step 2: Cut approximately ¾ ” off each corner of the floor piece to create drainage holes.

Step 3: Assemble the pieces. The front panel can be secured with as few as four screws.

Step 4: Predrilling is recommended to avoid splitting the wood.

Step 5: Recess the floor piece slightly to help keep the floor dry. Secure sides to the floor, then front to the sides. Drill out the mounting screw hole locations.

Hang your finished Carolina Wren box under roofs or eaves.
